QPR Target Tames Cameroon

QPR are getting little joy from their strikers at the moment, with only Jay Simpson providing anything resembling satisfactory form. So it could be a good sign that Daniel Cousin, one of their potential transfer targets (as reported here last week: http://hoopdreamsqpr.blogspot.com/2010/01/rangers-raid-hull-two-loan-signings-on.html) has found his scoring boots again, providing the only goal for Gabon in a shock 1-0 win over Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations yesterday.

Cousin will wait until the end of the tournament before deciding on his future, but QPR have tabled a six-month loan offer which he is seriously considering.

In an interview with France Football (http://www.francefootball.fr/FF/breves2010/20100111_220043_cousin-vers-les-rangers.html - for any linguists out there), he also revealed that he is in touch with a number of French clubs, without naming any names, but has received no other concrete offers apart from QPR's.

Then again, if Cousin really hits the heights in Angola, where the Africa Cup of Nations is being held, his current manager at Hull City, Phil Brown, may have second thoughts about loaning the player out until the end of the season.

Brown voiced his concerns about Cousin remaining in the country after the gun attack on the Togo national team bus which led to that team's withdrawal from the tournament.

But that wasn't weighing too deeply on the striker's mind when he put Gabon into a surprise lead in their Group D match against the Indomitable Lions.

A defensive mix-up and poorly-placed pass from Cédric Moubamba landed at the feet of Cousin and he placed a low shot past Cameroon keeper Carlos Kameni.

Cameroon piled on the pressure in the second half, but with Inter Milan striker Samuel Eto'o struggling to find goal-scoring opportunities, Gabon were able to hold on for only their second win ever in the tournament.

Paul Hart will be keeping a keen eye on their remaining games.
